Season three of Californication ended with a punch to Hank’s stomch; or maybe his groin, to be more specific.
On the season finale, just
as the womanizer chose to settle down with Karen, he received a surprise visit from Mia. The end result, and final scene, was of Hank being dragged away in handcuffs, as Karen and Becca look on helplessly.
“I always thought that it would be the right endpoint,” series creator Tom Kapinos told TV
Guide. “That secret with Mia — the fact that [Hank] slept with her and Karen doesn’t know about it — is such a huge part of the show and was a huge part of the pilot. To a degree, by the time you get to Season 3, the audience had kind of forgotten about it. So it felt like the right time to bring it back. On another show you might wait to the end of the series to answer that question, but I always vaguely knew that’s how I wanted the season to end.”
Where does this cliffhanger leave Hank in season four?
Kapinos wouldn’t reveal any detailed spoilers, but did say:
“For three seasons, I’ve had a character who’s seemingly unaffected by everything. He skates through life, there are no consequences. I think what we’re going to be dealing with next season is consequence. At some point, that character has to be rocked by the choices he makes. That doesn’t mean the show is no fun anymore, but I think it’s time to deal with consequences of your actions.”
With Hank in the legal system next year, how will Karen respond? That’s a central issue, Kapinos confirmed.
“Can Karen ever actually get over something like that? That’s certainly what we’ll be exploring in the season or seasons to come,” he said.
In the Season 3 finale, Hank, Karen and Becca are packing up to move to NYC, but a series of unfortunate events may put a wrench in those plans…
Hank is plagued by dreams where he’s floating peacefully in a swimming pool, while Karen and Becca watch on. However, his anxieties, represented by his University affairs, keep haunting him, reminding him of all of his failures. He tries to quiet them by taking slugs of beer, but it’s all he can do just to barely stay afloat…
Everything starts to come to a head when Mia shows up for a surprise visit. She is in town for a reading of ‘her’ book “Fucking and Punching,” which has just been released in paperback. She invites Karen and Hank to the reading because she wants to introduce them to her new boyfriend.
Sue Collini is shutting down the agency because she wants to spend more time with her husband and to finish her memoir. She asks Charlie to be her agent, assuming that as her agent, he will also continue to sleep with her. He accept the professional offer, but declines the sexual proposition, as things are looking up with Marcy, or so he thinks.
Charlie told Hank that he was thinking of reversing his vasectomies (he had 2), wanting to make a baby with Marcy. When he made such a proposition to Marcy, she didn’t seem at all interested in the baby-making, just the sex. In fact, when Charlie woke up the next morning after a night of love-making, he found the divorce papers out, already signed by Marcy.
At Mia’s reading, Karen and Hank meet her manager, Paul, who they later learn is Mia’s boyfriend. Later that evening, Paul engages Hank in conversation about the authenticity of Mia’s writing. Apparently Mia is having trouble with her second novel. Hank says he’s not surprised, and Paul insinuates that he knows that Mia didn’t write Fucking and Punching. Paul explains that when Mia couldn’t produce additional pages for the paperback version, he started asking questions, causing Mia to break down and tell him everything. Paul thinks that it might be good for Mia to come clean, as a publicity stunt, which would be better than just fading away completely since she can’t actually write. Hank is absolutely horrified.
After another night of haunting dreams, Hank takes Becca out for a morning walk. Hank is very distracted, until Becca tells Hank she has something very important to discuss with him. She divulges that when she last slept over Chelseas, they’s snuck out, met up with boys, and she had sex for the first time! Becca wanted to tell Hank first and she became quite emotional telling Hank how much she loved him.
Hank is more determined than ever to protect his family now. He goes to see Mia to try to get her to stop whatever Paul has planned. He pleas with her to protect Karen and Becca, who were like a mother and a sister to her. She sees his perspective, and doesn’t want to hurt them, but she is having such a hard time keeping up this facade she has created. Paul comes over and tries to reason with Hank, but he insults Hank’s fathering, and gets punched in the face. The two men end up bloody in the pool and Paul threatens to call the police on Hank.
Hank gets home to an almost completely packed up house. Karen is so upset when she sees that he’s hurt. The look in Hank’s eyes is heartbreaking- he has to tell Karen everything. You don’t hear exactly what they say to each, other, as the song Rocket Man plays in the background, but you can see all the emotions they’re feeling. Karen runs out of the house and Hank chases after her.
As promised, Paul has called the police – they drive up and pull Hank off Karen. He gets taken away in handcuffs as an unaware Becca sees the whole thing. She tries to run to him, but her sobbing mothers takes her into her arms.
Cut to the dream motif, where Hank is chugging a bottle of wine in the pool and just crashes under the water’s surface.
“I think that ultimately, [women] are going to have to raise the white flag and just accept us for the emotional retards that we are.” – Hank to Charlie
This was a real uplifter from last week’s dull and otherwise boring episode, if not for the courageous and outrageous efforts of Charlie and his quest to score Rick Springfield a bag of the Colombian itching powder. And I mean uplifter in both the quality and emotional sense of the word … that I just made up.
The girls in Hank’s life, Karen, Becca and Charlie’s ex Marcy, go for a girls’ night out, and Hank gives Charlie one of his world famous benders after he gets canned for losing Springfield as a client. But it’s more about seeing how much greasy California cuisine and $10 a bottle booze they can shove into their systems. Like all great drunken road trips, it’s a night of story-telling, story-making and personal exploration, if the memories can make it through the vodka and wine haze that follows them wherever they go.
Hank and Charlie start out at (where else?) the bar, sizing up their lives in their usual machine gun style of ranting dialogue. But in the midst of the rapid fire exchange, things slow down as Hank recalls a very lovely story about the best breakfast he ever had because Karen made it for him. It shows that Hank is at least willing to embrace change and accept that there is more to a good woman than what she does for him physically.
This wonderfully touching speech is brought to a dead halt when a bar patron spills a drink on Charlie, refuses to apologize, and calls both of them a fairly nasty word, something Hank proves by kissing Charlies dead on the lips and then knocking the patron’s block off to next Sunday. Both of them get thrown out of the bar by their belts and announce it’s time to go on a bender. Don’t you love it when something manages to surprise you while it is surprising you? It’s like walking in on your surprise birthday party only to go into the bathroom in between drinks and discover that someone else is throwing you a surprise birthday party.
Meanwhile at the “girls night out” or GNO as Marcy calls it (glad to see the California public schools haven’t failed everyone over there in Lalawood), the girls are going off on their various man whores, except for Becca who prefers to just listen and MST3K every word that falls out of Marcy’s mouth. That may or may not be because she doesn’t have a boyfriend, but I’m not here to judge … people. Marcy is still lamenting the fact that Rick Springfield dumped her. Mix that with two bottles of red wine and you have one bitter woman. Sounds like she needs more than just a night out.
The boys, however, are getting in all sorts of crazy shenanigans, especially when they wander into a bookstore and find Hank’s first editions autographed and going for $100 bucks, none of which he’ll ever see. If this were a Dukes of Hazzard episode (and I know that’s stretching things a bit, nevertheless), this would be the point that the shot would freeze-frame and Waylon Jennings would come on in a voiceover and say, “Now can you believe these two alcoho-aholes are about to shoplift their own book … why there ain’t no way they are getting out of this quesadilla of trouble?!?” But then, the scene manages to take things even further when the two spot Julien Self’s new book and decide to leave their own … uh … unique bookmark.
But then, a few scenes later, all of this Animal House style hilarity reaches the high watermark when Hank and Charlie find themselves staring down the business end of a snub-nose pistol in a grocery store robbery. The two make it out bullet-wound free but learn something that no amount of booze and personal pain can teach them: their true place in life. Hank says he realizes that the only thing he was thinking about while his life ran before his eyes was seeing Karen and Becca again. Maybe a man can change on his terms if he’s willing to realize what’s most important to him. And with that, they continue drinking.
Meanwhile back at the GNO, Becca becomes the sage one and helps Karen realize that trying to change the person you love isn’t really showing them the love they deserve. In the end, she ends up making Hank a hangover breakfast. Who knew a show about fornicating could be so uplifting, in every sense of the actual word?

Episode Synopsis: CALIFORNICATION “The Apartment” Season 3 Episode 8 – Hank’s in for a hedonistic night to remember when Jackie (EVA AMURRI) and two stripper friends arrive at his doorstep, unannounced. The next morning, before Hank can escort his new friends from the apartment, Charlie shows up with a verbally abusive Rick Springfield (RICK SPRINGFIELD). Hank’s forced to hide the hung-over party girls all over the house after Jill (DIANE FARR) and Felicia (EMBETH DAVIDTZ) pay surprise visits. The charade reaches its boiling point when Dean Koons (PETER GALLAGHER) arrives on the scene, resulting in a messy catharsis by fire.
